At a senior living community, you can enjoy a vibrant and carefree lifestyle that includes plenty of time to pursue your interests, spend time with friends, and fully relax. However, it’s essential to identify which care option best suits your needs. At Kinship Pointe, we offer independent living and assisted living at each of our four communities. Both options are designed with warmth and kinship in mind and ensure that our residents feel happy, healthy, and valued. While each option provides unique features and levels of support, both share a commitment to fostering community and well-being. If you’re wondering about the difference between independent and assisted living, you’re in the right place.
Independent Living vs. Assisted Living
As you’ll see in the descriptions below, there’s quite a bit of overlap when it comes to the amenities and services provided in independent living and assisted living. Although each offers a distinct level of care aimed at different daily needs, they both include beautiful apartments, lively activity calendars, charming common areas, and more. If you’re struggling to determine which makes the most sense for you or your loved one, don’t hesitate to contact us for more information.
It’s also important to note that the difference between independent and assisted living can vary from one community to another. Here we’ll focus on what we know best: the four Kinship Pointe senior living communities located in Kearney, McCook, Seward, and Wayne, Nebraska.
Independent Living
Designed for active adults ages 55 and older, independent living fosters freedom, community, and comfort — and, of course, independence. Seniors who wish to live independently and require little or no medical supervision are a good fit for this level of care. This option is suitable for both working and retired seniors.
Residents are free to live an active lifestyle and pursue their passions, and they can take advantage of all the community’s fun activities, events, classes, and parties. Whether you enjoy reading, arts and crafts, attending fitness classes, or scheduling get-togethers with your friends, independent living offers an ideal environment. And with community staff taking care of household chores — from mowing the lawn to home repairs, meal preparation, and apartment cleaning — you’ll have more time to enjoy what matters most. You’ll dine in a restaurant-style dining room and have ample opportunities to make new friends and nurture your social well-being.
One- and two-bedroom apartments with various layouts and views are available. All apartments include a full kitchen (complete with a stovetop, oven, microwave, and refrigerator), a washer/dryer hookup (washer/dryers are available for a small fee), and concierge service.
Assisted Living
Assisted living is designed for seniors who wish to live a full, vibrant, and active life but also require help with some day-to-day activities. Friendly, well-trained staff members can assist with dressing, bathing, getting ready for the day, getting ready for bed, medication management, housekeeping, and more. Residents are free to enjoy their favorite hobbies and interests, spend time with their loved ones, attend activities and events, and more, all while enjoying the peace of mind that comes with knowing supportive staff is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Chores like housekeeping and laundry are covered by the staff, and residents receive a well-balanced combination of independence and support. Services offered in assisted living include all the following:
- Continuum of care
- Support from a full-time director of health and wellness
- Delicious and nutritious meals
- Medication management
- Bathing and dressing assistance
- Toileting and grooming assistance
- A personal monitoring emergency pendant
- Weekly housekeeping and laundry
- Fun activities and outings
- Local scheduled transportation
Studio and one-bedroom apartments are available, with lots of space for queen-sized beds and full-size furniture. Apartments also include easy-access showers, ample closet space, convenient kitchenettes, and individually controlled thermostats to control the heating and air-conditioning. Residents can also enjoy a number of lovely community spaces, including a common room with a fireplace, a fitness and activities room, a restaurant-style dining room, a bistro, a theater room, a beauty shop, and more — all located on site and within walking distance so residents can enjoy them at their leisure.
